Add More Color to Your Life... and Diet


Eat the rainbow... did you know that brightly colored fruits and vegetables are full of antioxidants and phytonutrients? These elements are essential to nourishing the cells of the body, reducing inflammation and promoting healing. The CDC says that adults should be eating 2-3 cups of veggies per day, yet only about 10% of adults actually do.


When we think about dieting, we think about all of the things we can't have... the cakes, cookies, soft drinks and sweet tea. Living a healthy life should not consist of depravation. Yes, it's important to cut back on the processed sugar and empty calories but it isn't realistic or sustainable to say you're never going to each another cookie again. Rather than focusing on eliminating foods from your diet, try adding them! In the health coaching world, we call this "crowding out." This consists of adding health promoting foods and beverages.


Smoothies are a great way to add in an array of fruits and veggies. Challenge yourself to add one green smoothie per day to your diet. Yes - green smoothies! Real fruits and vegetables can be delicious. Fruit packs a great amount of sweetness but the veggies helps keep your drink alkaline (AKA health-boosting). But in the beginning, if you need more fruits for more sweetness - DO IT! Do whatever it takes to get in those vegetables. Blending your fruits and vegetables helps maintain the fiber which helps soak up all the toxins in your system and flush them out. In addition, smoothies can be very filling.

Basic Smoothie Formula

* 2 cups liquid base (filtered water, coconut water, almond milk)

* 2 cups green veggies (spinach, romaine, kale, etc)

* 2 cups fruit (try using frozen fruits!)


* optional add-ins: 1 fat (avocado, coconut oil, or tablespoon of nut butter), protein powder, chia, hemp, flax, maca... just to name a few
